When you picture the wildlife of Argentine Patagonia, the puma probably comes to mind first. Thanks to their elusive nature and massive ranges, these apex predators have long been known as the region’s original ‘ghost cats.’. But look a little closer across this sweeping, one-million-square-kilometer landscape, and you might just find two other phantoms sharing the steppe: the Geoffroy’s cat and the Southern Pampas cat.

As top-tier mesocarnivores, both of these small cats play an essential role in keeping local prey populations in check. The problem is that they are exceptionally good at staying hidden. Their cryptic nature makes them incredibly tough to study, leaving wildlife managers struggling to build science-based conservation plans. That’s where Felidae Conservation Fund’s Patagonia Wild Cats project comes in, working to pull these felids out of obscurity, gather crucial baseline data, and mitigate the growing threats against them.

Geoffroy’s cat

Weighing in at just four to five kilograms, the Geoffroy’s cat (Leopardus geoffroyi) ranges from Bolivia and southern Brazil all the way down to southern Patagonia. The southernmost populations are particularly vulnerable right now; they suffer from lower genetic diversity than their northern counterparts and are facing the brunt of rapid climate shifts (1). 

For the most part, Geoffroy’s cats are adaptable habitat generalists. They have a varied diet and can tolerate a moderate amount of human disturbance (2,3). However, they actively avoid severely degraded or overgrazed grasslands. To hunt and rest safely, they rely on dense, woody scrublands that provide essential cover from larger predators (4).

The Southern Pampas Cat

If the Geoffroy’s cat is hard to spot, the Pampas cat is practically a rumor. Historically, science recognized just one widely distributed Pampas cat species across South America. But a landmark 2020 taxonomic revision completely rewrote the rulebook. By analyzing genetics, skull traits, and ecological niches, researchers discovered that the ‘Pampas cat’ is actually five entirely distinct species (5).

The species roaming the Patagonian Steppe is the Southern Pampas cat (Leopardus pajeros). This split drastically changes its conservation outlook; rather than being a part of a widespread, secure population, L. pajeros is now recognized as a highly restricted and incredibly rare felid. While they are considered practically locally extinct in Argentina’s northern pampas grasslands (6), they are holding on in the dry steppes of the south.

Weighing between three and seven kilograms, Southern Pampas cats are opportunistic, ground-dwelling hunters. They primarily feed on small mammals like mountain viscachas, guinea pigs, and leaf-eared mice. But they aren’t picky, they’ve been known to take down lizards, flamingos, and even penguin chicks and eggs (7). Depending on where they live, they can be strictly nocturnal or active around the clock (7).

What Makes Them ‘Ghost Cats’?

Both species have evolved to become almost invisible against the open Patagonian steppe. Their sandy, greyish coats offer perfect camouflage, allowing them to blend seamlessly into the grassy plains and rocky outcroppings. They are solitary and largely active during twilight or the dead of night, making human encounters incredibly rare. On top of that, they naturally exist at low densities; a single cat requires anywhere from 3 to 20 square kilometers just to survive (4,8).  

Conservation Threats

Both cats are facing a gauntlet of modern challenges. While the Geoffroy’s cat is globally classified as Least Concern, the recent taxonomic split puts immense pressure on the Southern Pampas cat. Both species have suffered severe population crashes across Argentina.

Historically, the primary threat was fashion. From the 1960s through the late 1980s, these cats were heavily hunted for their pelts. By 1980, Geoffroy’s cats were among the most heavily trafficked wildlife on the planet (9). To stop the bleeding, the Argentine government banned domestic trade and, in 1986, cracked down on the export of native wild cats (10). While the fur trade has largely died down, illegal hunting still happens in isolated pockets (2).

Today,  the overarching killer is habitat fragmentation.   Since the late 1700s, vast stretches of the Patagonian steppe have been converted into grazing landscapes, leading to overgrazing and desertification. As ranches carve up the habitat, cats are forced closer to human settlements. This "edge effect" brings a deadly new threat: free-ranging domestic dogs. Dogs not only prey directly on these small wild felids, but they also act as vectors for fatal pathogens like canine distemper (11,12). Add in the rising risk of vehicle collisions on rural highways, and survival becomes a daily gamble.

Retaliatory killings

Because they share the landscape with massive sheep ranches, Pampas and Geoffroy’s cats are frequently, and unfairly, scapegoated for livestock losses. This blame game inevitably leads to retaliatory killings by ranchers protecting their livelihoods.

However, the science tells a very different story. A 2024 study in central Patagonian Argentina analyzed the diets of Geoffroy’s cats living right next to sheep pastures. The researchers found absolutely no evidence of domestic sheep in their diet (13). These cats are taking wild prey, not livestock. Dispelling this widespread misinformation is crucial to stopping retaliatory hunting.

Patagonia Wild Cats Project

To rewrite this narrative, the Felidae Conservation Fund co-launched the Patagonia Wild Cats Project in 2022, partnering with Dr. Mauro Lucherini and a coalition of local researchers. The team is deploying camera traps to map the exact distribution and behavior of these understudied felines.

Early data confirms that both species are far rarer in the region than previously thought. But the project's ultimate goal isn't just to collect data, it's to put it to work. By partnering directly with the ranchers who share the steppe with these predators, the field team is actively testing and implementing non-lethal deterrents, like fox lights and livestock guardian dogs. Only through this kind of community-driven coexistence can we ensure Patagonia's smallest ghosts don't disappear forever.
